What’s so special? Food you know you and your kid will both eat? Check. Room to run and play with abandon? Check. Something ordinary turned into a fun outing with very little effort? Check. There’s just something about fresh air mixed with friends and food that is just wonderful.
As the weather promises to cool down, great picnic spots in our fair city are calling my name, here are my top 5:
1. Loose Park
There’s no way to make it through this list without mentioning Loose Park. There are tons of great shady spots, ducks to feed your leftovers to, a playground, a spray park and ahem, you can bring adult beverages. I’m sold. Preschoolers will also enjoy dancing around to the random musicians that pop up regularly.
2. Boulevard Drive-In
A picnic either at a picnic table, the tailgate of your car, or on a blanket while watching a double feature and staying up past your bedtime is a great idea. There will be tons of other families doing the same thing and there’s even a playground for your restless brood.
3. The Lawn of the Nelson
It doesn’t get any more scenic and Kansas City than this. Try not to bug the love bugs on their picnic first date. Bubbles and ring toss games are welcome, plus you can take in some great art while you’re there.
4. Kangaroo Area at the Kansas City Zoo
Where else can you dine alfresco while kangaroos hop by? It feels even more fun that there aren’t any fences between you and the wildlife. Spend your lunch searching for joeys, and commenting about how this is even better than watching the bunnies hop by during backyard picnics.
5. English Landing Park
What a view! Look right, adorable scenery, look left river and skyline. Tall trees shade your lunch, and kids are happily playing away.
So those are my top picks, where do you picnic in Kansas City?
