Focus on the Present with Blooom Fund Management

I’ll never forget the first time I flew with my son. As we were playing peek-a-boo, the stewardess began the in-flight instructions. Although I had heard those hundreds of times before, one jumped out at me on this trip: “In the event of loss of cabin pressure, secure your oxygen mask before you help others.” Looking at my little guy sitting next me, the words were a bit startling. Instinctively, you always want to help your child first. Emotionally, the instructions felt wrong; logically, I knew they were right.

I call this the “airplane rule” and as a parent, I admit I rarely follow it. The kids are bathed, fed and clothed before I am. They make it to all of their practices on time, whereas I am lucky to make one workout a week. I don’t say this to complain, I say this to make a point.

I know I won’t starve eating just my kids’ PBJ crust for lunch; I am fairly certain nothing bad will come from skipping a shower now and then. But, there are some actions that are detrimental if you fail to follow the “airplane rule.”

Finances are one of them – and I don’t mean the day-to-day finances that directly affect my family’s well being. The mortgage and utilities are paid, grocery money is in the budget, and I have a “kids’ fund” for school, clothes and camps. No, I am talking about my personal finances, specifically retirement.

Luckily, a few months ago I was introduced to blooom.

Focus on the Present with Blooom Fund Management

Blooom is an online automated retirement tool that professionally invests and manages your 401k for you. It also revisits your 401k investments every 90 days to make sure they are where they need to be. I consider blooom to be my “retirement oxygen mask.” I don’t have time (nor do I have the desire) to research investments and manage the accounts.

Blooom does all the work for me so I can basically put my 401k on autopilot and focus on the here and now.

Emotionally, it feels right to focus on the present; logically, when it comes to retirement, I know that is wrong. I am relieved that there are solutions like blooom. Knowing that blooom is taking care of my future, allows me to concentrate on, and enjoy, the present.
