5 Quick Tips For Playroom Organization

I’m the kind of dork who has systems, checklists and protocols for all aspects of my life. My boys’ playroom is no exception. Maybe I’m too much of a stickler, but I would argue that my kids play with more gusto when their playroom is organized. They take pride in accessing their favorite toys by themselves, and I get more uninterrupted time to cook dinner, do laundry and take an occasional breath.

Find room for extra toy storage under tables and in ottomans.

1. Storage Solutions
The number one must-have in any playroom is plenty of storage. Between birthdays, Christmases, and grandparent visits, you’re bound to acquire new toys, and you want them to fit nicely in your space. Whether you like crates or cubbies, boxes or bags, the most important thing is that your child can safely access the toys on their own.

2. Label Loosely
There are benefits to labeling storage bins, even before your kids can read. It enables other caregivers to tidy up without you. Dad, grandma, and babysitter know where things go, and so do you. Keeping labels vague (Build and Stack, Music, Things That Go) allows the playroom to grow with your child without frequent relabeling.

Puzzle storage is a must.

3. Puzzle Stackers
Puzzle storage is a bit of a headache. Either you stack them up and no one wants to try to extract the bottom puzzle Jenga-style, or you lay them out side-by-side and they take up too much space. The Melissa and Doug puzzle rack provides a great solution for us. It holds 12 puzzles, and they easily slide in and out. Worth every penny ($20).

4. Rotate Toys
You may not agree with me on this, but less is more when it comes to toys. Too many toys are overwhelming to play with and store. Box up a bunch of toys for a month or two and resurrect them on a rainy day. You’ll be shocked to find that old “boring” toys gain new life when they feel fresh to your child.

Forward-facing bookracks make books inviting and easy to access.

5. Make Books Visible
I have yet to meet a parent who doesn’t want their child to love books. The best money we spent on our playroom was a forward-facing bookrack. My boys explore books significantly more often when they’re visible and easy to store. We found ours at Pottery Barn Kids, but I’ve seen the Ikea spice rack used for this purpose, as well as similar items on Etsy.

Sometimes finding a space to serve as a playroom is half the battle. Consider rethinking your house’s layout to create a playroom. We turned our dining room into a playroom and plan to keep it that way while our kids are young. Maybe you have a corner of the kitchen, a basement, or a living room/play room combo. Whatever the case may be, I hope my Type-A tips help you out.

A Topeka native, Caroline was lucky enough to get her high school sweetheart to marry her. She spent her first few years out of college as a gifted education teacher and dance team coach in St. Louis before fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a stay-at-home mom. Upon moving to Kansas in 2014, Caroline founded KC Tot Spot , a current collection of the best KC-area hangouts for young kids. When she’s not designing complex wooden train track configurations for her two toddler boys, you’ll find Caroline at a local theatrical performance, attempting to sing and play piano at the same time, or daydreaming of one day cultivating a thriving vegetable garden.
