Building a City of Readers: KCMB Book Drive

Kansas City Moms Blog is proud to be a resource for moms in Kansas City. We enjoy supporting you in your struggles through motherhood and celebrating with you in your triumphs.

Beyond doing our part to develop a strong moms in the KC metro, we also see ourselves as a community partner in making KC stronger for families and children.

We’re excited to live out that passion for our community in a tangible way. This month, we are partnering with Turn the Page KC to emphasize the importance of reading, especially during the summer months when school isn’t in session.

Turn the Page KC is a local non-profit founded by Mayor Sly James that instigates Kansas City’s most positive future through third grade reading proficiency.  If a student cannot read proficiently by the end of third grade their likeliness of future academic success drops. Reading is the essential tool needed to continually grasp further concepts.

Right now, only about half of all students in Kansas City, MO are reading at grade level or above by the end of third grade.

On Wednesday, June 20, 2018, Turn the Page KC will host “Reading Rocks,” a music-themed Summer Reading Kick-off Event at the Sprint Center for 1,500 KC students in grades K-3. Attendees will be treated to a book reading by Mayor James, a musical performance, crafts and literacy activities. But the best part is every kid in attendance gets to take home a bag of books of their very own. We’ll share more details about the event and the opportunity for you to register soon.

In order to ensure that each student has at least three books in their bag, Turn the Page KC needs about 5,000 books! This is where Kansas City moms can help. And, we’re making it easy!

We’ve curated a Amazon Wish List for the KCMB Book Drive for Turn the Page KC! All you have to do is throw a few books in your Amazon cart, which let’s face it, you probably have multiple opportunities a week to do this 🙂

We’ll collect the books and deliver to Turn the Page in advance of the Summer Reading Celebration.

Used (in good condition) books are also accepted. You can message us and we’ll collect them from you. Like we said, we’ll make this easy!

We believe the gift of reading and education is invaluable to ALL of our kids in Kansas City. We know you’re passionate about your own kids. Once you’re a mother, it’s hard to not have a heart for all the kids in our community.

Let’s show the city the power of our moms and give the gift of learning through books!
