#GivingTuesday: Harvesters’ Big BackSnack Give Back

Kansas City Moms Blog is thrilled to partner with Harvesters to highlight their work in supporting those in need of food assistance in our community.

Big BackSnack Give BackCelebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday kicks off a charitable holiday season when many focus their attention (and their resources) on organizations doing important work in their community. On this #GivingTuesday, Kansas City Moms Blog is excited to once again highlight the work of Harvesters – The Community Food Network. Their newest volunteer opportunity, Harvesters’ Big BackSnack Give Back, will bring adults and children together on December 3 at one of Kansas City’s top holiday destinations: Union Station.

If you’re looking to give back this holiday season in a way the whole family can be involved, then Harvesters’ Big BackSnack Give Back is the event for you. (For details on Harvesters’ BackSnack program, click here.) Just bring the family to Union Station on Sunday, December 3 and join other Kansas City area families in packing BackSnacks for hungry children in our community. There will be kids’ activities, hot cocoa, snacks, holiday music from 94.9 KCMO and more.

In our community, one in six children is food insecure. Food insecurity means that a person or household may have food today, but does not know if there will be food tomorrow or enough food for everyone in the household. Many families in our community struggle to feed their kids during holiday breaks from school as they lose access to free and reduced-price meals at school.

The Big BackSnack Give Back will be a “first come, first pack” event so there is no need to sign up if you plan to attend. There will be eight 20-minute packing shifts (see below) with a 10-minute break between each shift. Each shift can accommodate 24 volunteers which makes this a perfect serving opportunity for extended families, community groups, etc. Please plan to arrive at least ten minutes before your shift begins. The shift packing times are as follows:

11:00 a.m.
11:30 a.m.
12:00 p.m.
12:30 p.m.
1:00 p.m.
1:30 p.m.
2:00 p.m.
2:30 p.m.

Before and after your packing time, be sure to check out all the fun activities mentioned above or some of the many holiday festivities taking place in and around Union Station.

With your help, Harvesters’ BackSnack program provides packs of nutritious food to nearly 20,000 students in our community. Through their Big BackSnack Give Back event, all of us can help make sure no child goes hungry this holiday season.
