Homeschooling in Kansas City

Before I was a parent, I always knew that I wanted to home school. After a year of public school, my husband and I made the decision to make the transition. This has been one of those big life changing decisions. A decision that requires support, resources, and community. If home education is something your family is considering, you will find such an inclusive group here in the Kansas City area. We were welcomed into an informative and diverse network of families, and offered many unique learning opportunities.

Kansas City has always had that small town, community vibe to me, which is one of the many reasons to love living in this area.  In every stage of parenting (and life) I have found like minded families to connect with. The homeschooling scene here is KC just the same. From secular, religious, varying grade level, subjects, and lifestyles there are so many wonderful groups to choose from, connect with, and learn from. The best addition to your  resource list is meeting experienced people. Here are some great Facebook groups to get started with.

We have met such great people through events and classes that these groups put on. It is easier to stay connected and informed being involved in a bigger network. There is also something always going on! The admins and volunteers of these groups do such a great job developing a calendar of meet ups and encouraging conversations.
Following hashtags and people on Instagram has also been one of the most beneficial ways I have discovered what has worked best for our family, and an online support system. Search your interests, follow, engage and you will find there are many to connect with locally!

In addition to new friends  Kansas City area businesses and community services are also welcoming  and accommodating. There are many opportunities for classes, field trips and ways to be involved. Follow your children’s interests or choose based on your current curriculum.
The rich educational experiences offered here in KC make clocking your hours simple.

Our Top 5 KC Area Home School Experiences
(so far!!!)

Museum at Prairiefire

Playing in the discovery room is usually a weekly trip for us. It is our favorite! The best staff and hands on exhibits. They also offer regular home school classes. Visiting the museum is also great for families with children of all ages.  Check out their membership options to make adding regular visits affordable!

Scraps KC

Although our home art area typically looks like this wonderful art supply warehouse they offer a huge stock of every art supply you can imagine. At amazing prices. They teach unique kids classes as well. We always add a stop here when we are in the area to drop a donation or shop new materials,  we also work in a class as often as possible. They are preventing so much from going into landfills and doing all this while providing help and support to area homeless. A great organization, doing great work, operating an amazing business.

The Cooking Station

If you have any cooking show loving kids check out all the classes offered here. Pies to foo

d truck foods, such a yummy variety of classes taught by a local mom in a kid friendly kitchen. Kids get to learn new recipes with their group and you don’t have to clean up the mess!

KC Clay Guild

The opportunity for hands on experience is one of the reasons we are choosing to home school. Classes here are exactly what I dreamed of for my children. Working in their studio, with real tools, being lead by talented artists was so special. Learning the entire process and methods there has carried over to introducing more techniques and art history at home.

Burr Oaks Nature Center

This quiet little gem is the perfect spot for outdoor, nature loving families. An indoor learning center (with a slide and snakes!!) and the most wonderful outdoor classroom and hiking trails. They have a nice eating area for all the snacks too! A perfect spot to bring some work, sign up for one of their classes, and enjoy an afternoon learning all about the local environment.

Our family has spent the first six months of our dive into homeschooling just getting our toes wet with this new lifestyle. We look forward to continue growing friendships and connecting more  friends and exploring and experiencing everything that KC offers.

Jess Rodenburg
I am a KC implant but couldn’t imagine ever leaving the Midwest. I grew up in Colorado, moved to the Caribbean in my 20’s, and landed here in KC. I have always had a case of wanderlust and travel as much as possible. Experiencing new cultures, meeting different types of people, and trying new food has been life changing for me and I want my kids to have that experience now instead of waiting until they are adults. Right now we are focused on US road-trips to see National Parks and all The World's Largest along the way. We are a homeschooling family! I like to over share on the internet about divorce, sobriety, therapy, and single mom life. If we are not on the road you’ll find me working on my social media management business, watching Grey’s Anatomy, or painting a mural.
