KC Summer Guide: Storytimes, Activities and Day Camps

Kids not old enough for traditional camp can still experience the benefits at these mini camps, storytimes, workshops and classes featuring art, science, cooking and music. Be sure to check out our comprehensive summer camp guide!

Storytime in the Village

A free + fun morning, 10 – 11:30 a.m. filled with crafts,  snacks and a live reading by a local KC author. Each author will be signing books and lead an interactive reading. Books available for purchase at event. 

Stories include: “My Favorite Job Is You” by Ashley Flynn (5/30),  “When I Grow Up, I Want to Be A Jayhawk/Wildcat” by Greg Hardin (6/27), “The Night the World Turned Royal Blue” by Jason Sivewright (7/25), “The Great Puppy Invasion” by Alastair Heim (8/29)

Kids Summer Programs – Ironwoods Park

Free performances at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday in June at either Ironwoods Amphitheater or the Lodge at Ironwoods Park (depending on the weather). Get there early for the best seats and wear sunscreen!

Performers include: Funky Mama (6/5), Mr. Stinky Feet (6/12), StoneLion Puppet Show (6/19), Juggler Brian Wendling (6/26)

Storytime – Laughing Place Bakery

Join the Laughing Place Bakery in Gladstone for snacks and summer storytime. First child is $5.00, each additional sibling is $2.50. RSVP on Facebook for the June 6 and June 7 event at 9:30 a.m.

 

Adventure Time – Paradise Park

Paradise Park ‘s Discovery Play area offers a weekly themed Adventure Time at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily (no noon time on Sundays). Staff read a story, lead children through an interactive activity, guide them through an art project and facilitates a tasty cooking project they get to eat when finished.

Stay and play both indoor and outdoor discovery areas, or bring the whole family and try miniature golf, go-carts, batting cages and more! 

Summer Camp – Ceramic Café

Campers learn a variety of kiln fired arts including glass fusing, hand building with clay and pottery painting and glazing techniques. Creative Story Time is also offered every Tuesday and Friday featuring a story, related pottery project and snack.

Kids in the Kitchen – The Culinary Center of Kansas City

Classes are offered for kids as young as age 2 and cover topics like cooking fundamentals, baking, ethnic cuisines, BBQ and more.

Taste Buds Kitchen

Camps are offered for day sessions or week long for kids as young as 4. Family classes are also available for toddler through teens and their families.

Summer Camp – French and Music House

Week-long camps for all types of students with classes in art, Spanish, French and music.

Critter Club – Kansas City Zoo

This weekly preschool (ages 3-5) science hour meets at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. in the Zoo Learning Center Sunroom. Adults are free, children are $5, and FOTZ members get a 10% discount. If you have not pre-registered, check in at the Education office.

Art Camps/Classes – Wee Create Studio

Wee Create Studio is a neighborhood art space for kids and their families in Prairie Village. Children’s art classes focus on process-based art exploration and learning. The Wee Create Studio way for kids to develop artistically encourages children to experiment and create art in their own way.

Summer Art Classes – Orange Easel

Summer is about exploration, creativity, mess-making, freedom and invention. Orange Easel has classes for every age and artistic ability!

Camp ARTrageous – Paint, Glaze & Fire

Camp ARTrageous is big-time fun for kids and big-time convenience for parents. Four camp sessions available with six 90-minute classes per session. Themes include Beach Bound, All About Me, Movie Mania and Woodland Wonders. Sign up for a full session or mix and match classes to fit your schedule. Ages 6-12.
