Things Are About to Get P-interesting

Pinterest. Pretty much the greatest thing ever. I mean, a virtual pin-board where you can save anything and everything from the internet and organize it all onto an unlimited number of categorized boards? Genius.

I have to admit, I wasn’t really into Pinterest when it was first made available by the Internet gods. You had to be “invited” or submit a request to join, and I didn’t fully understand the concept. I finally gave it a try after hearing my mom speak so highly of this magical thing called Pinterest. I’ve since wasted spent hours of my life on that glorious website and I can’t stop – I won’t stop – pinning.

The best part of Pinterest is living vicariously through my pins. I have designed and decorated my dream home, revamped my closet, landscaped my yard and planned fantastic parties. Everything in my virtual world is beautiful and stylish, and I can dream about it all from the comfort of my very own couch.

The second best part of Pinterest is trying to make some of my pins a reality. You know, so I’m not totally depressed that I don’t actually have the big, beautiful dream home or trendy wardrobe.

I get my desire to be crafty from my own mom, although she’s in a league of her own. She can do no wrong when it comes to whipping up a little DIY project over the course of a single afternoon. Some of my pinterest-turned-real-life endeavors have been total failures and some have taken days or weeks. Some have even turned out pretty decent, and I’ve learned a few things about myself along the way.

Master Chef, I am Not
I’m not the best cook. It stresses me out, I get nervous when I have more than one burner going at a time, and I often misread the recipe. I’m not even sure how it happens, but I always seem to mistake a teaspoon for a tablespoon or baking SODA for baking POWDER. You know who is a good cook, though? My husband. Yep. He does most of the cooking in the Oakley household but we plan the meals together, and I use Pinterest to pick out new recipes to try. I’ve given up on trying to recreate the Pinterest masterpieces myself, but when Justin is at the helm, it turns out pretty tasty.

Baby Photography is My Jam
Pinterest has turned me into a picture-taking fool. I have so many pictures of my kid, it’s borderline ridiculous. Pinterest is filled with so many tips and tutorials that it makes you think you’re a professional photographer. I’m definitely NOT a professional photographer but I do enjoy taking pictures, editing, and pretending! Instead of hiring a photographer to take newborn pictures of my daughter, I did them myself. I was p-inspired to take her monthly photos to document her first year and have big plans to do the same with baby number two, as well.

I Need Home Decor Help
I’ve blogged before about my attempt at making our house a home and when it was time to decorate the baby’s nursery, I wanted the same feeling for her room. I turned to Pinterest to create a space that was suitable for a baby girl. Nothing too frilly or pink but still feminine. After one search, I was overwhelmed! There were so many things I wanted to do and I was determined to incorporate them all. Pinterest projects consumed my life in the months leading up to her birth and the nursery turned out wonderfully, if I don’t say so myself. But, I might be biased.

Art is Open to Interpretation
Eventually, my baby turned into a “big girl,” and I was ready to redecorate yet another room in our house. You guessed it. Pinterest to the rescue. Her new room turned out to be ripped from the internet pages of that wonderful website but with my own “touch” added into the mix. The personal touch was a happy accident mostly because each project went awry at one point or another, and I had to re-do things several times before I was happy with the final result. In the end, though, I think I prefer it this way. I’m proud of how the room turned out but I wouldn’t have been able to do it with out my BFF Pinterest.

Thinking back, I’m not sure what I did before Pinterest came into my life. I never tried new recipes, my photography skills were seriously lacking, and I never created custom artwork. I’m only partially kidding but I’ve realized that I rely on that site quite a bit to bring some inspiration into my life! My affinity for the Big P runs deep, and I have no plans on slowing down. There are parties to plan and crafts to be made. The possibilities at my fingertips are endless.

Mackenzie Oakley
Hi! I’m Mackenzie, wife to Justin and mama to three beautiful babes. I grew up in Sioux Falls, SD and headed south for college in Lincoln, NE where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from UNL. I met my husband while I was visiting family in Kansas City in August 2007 and we've been together ever since. After graduating college in 2008, I landed my first job in Kansas City, Justin and I bought a house in Olathe, got married and started our little family. We’ve called the KC-area home for almost 10 years now! I work full-time for a small marketing firm and spend what little free time I have loving on my kids, attempting a little DIY here and blogging over at Baby By Oakley.
